This is the City's key link to important information about the Mountain View community and all that the City has to offer to residents, business, and visitors alike. Mountain View is ideally situated in the heart of Silicon Valley. It is home to just under 75,000 residents and is known for its diverse community and great quality of life. We are a vibrant community of good schools, safe neighborhoods, and excellent public facilities and amenities, including over 35 parks and an extensive trail system. The City has a wide spectrum of businesses, including many nationally and internationally known high-tech corporations and institutions. Mountain View enjoys a rich offering of cultural events, the Center for the Performing Arts, the Mountain View Public Library, live music at the Shoreline Amphitheatre, and Thursday Nights Live, as well as an annual Art & Wine Festival, A La Carte and Art Festival, the Annual Spring Downtown Parade, and a weekly Farmer's Market in a rich and diverse Downtown Mountain View.
Looking Ahead to the Challenges and Opportunities for 2010:
Mountain View’s critical goal for 2010 is protecting and enhancing the City’s financial well-being and finding the way back to a structurally balanced budget. Other important challenges this year include continued work on the General Plan, the evolving City organization, and High Speed Rail issues. Of the goals that City Council chose for the current fiscal year, I am particularly passionate about the following:
-
Proceeding with our environmental sustainability efforts so that we take care of our environment and weave responsibility for the health of our residents and of our natural environment in all we do as a City
-
Continuing our focus on youth services and energetically encouraging the involvement of our youth in City life
-
Strengthening our volunteer services and finding more and more ways to welcome and involve all our residents as active participants in our civic life
I believe we can continue to make progress on these goals even in the current environment of serious financial constraints.
The common theme in all the challenges and opportunities we face is the need to find a balance between reinventing ourselves as a community and as a City organization and protecting the core vision for Mountain View. We will have to navigate between preservation and innovation—a difficult job, but we can do it! The best predictor of the future is past performance, and we in Mountain View have many successes of which we are proud!
We are proud of our diversity, our vibrant, walkable Downtown, splendid Public Library, beloved neighborhoods and high-tech businesses that are the envy of all, our old farmhouses and new houses built to be as green as green can be, and our award-winning playing fields on top of a water storage reservoir—to name but a few highlights.
We are proud of our engaged and involved citizenry ready to invest time and energy in making Mountain View even better than it is—a readiness based on trust that the time and energy invested will be repaid with a responsive and transparent process that helps us reach good decisions.
