DROP-IN PROGRAMMING

The Senior Center offers many free activities. Drop in and enjoy free billiards, table tennis, card games, and daily crossword puzzles. Or, just come sit down and enjoy a cup of coffee and meet someone new.

Seniors are welcome to drop in and use the free Exercise Room that offers treadmills, a rowing machine, stationary bicycles and an elliptical trainer. Prior to using the exercise equipment each participant must attend the exercise orientation offered every Tuesday and Wednesday. Call 650-903-6330 to sign up.

In addition, a computer lab with 15 Internet-ready computers is available for use.

AQUATIC CLASSES
            § Aquatic Fitness- Exercises are designed to develop muscle tone, strength and flexibility as the body moves against the resistance of the water.            
            §
Deep Water Exercise- Aerobic an strengthening exercises are performed in deep water with the assistance of a floation device.

ARTHRITIS EXERCISE

This class isto improve the flexibility and posture of those individuals who suffer from arthritis. Safe, mild stretching techniques for every joint in the body will be utilized. To register or for more information, call Foothill College, (650) 949-7102.

CALLIGRAPHY – BEGINNING / INTERMEDIATE
Work on lettering and design place cards, menus, invitations, and announcements for a special event. Learning important layout techniques is included. Beginning and continuing students are encouraged to attend.

CERAMICS
Two ceramics classes are offered at the Senior Center: Basic Techniques and Small Clay Sculpture. Learn techniques, by hand and on the wheel, to build clay sculptures. Finishes for sculptures will be explored. Students will have completed pieces at the end of the session. Beginning students welcomed. *Materials furnished for a small fee.

CHINESE FOLK DANCE
The format of this class includes stretch and barre fundamentals followed by Chinese Folk Dance. Anyone can join regardless of prior dance experience. Besides getting in shape, you can also learn about Chinese culture and make new friends.

CHORUS
Like to sing? Join our performing chorus; all abilities welcome! Have fun while learning vocalizing and sight singing techniques in a range of music styles from popular show tunes to light classics. * Music fee of $25 collected at first class.

COMPUTER CLASSES
The Senior Center offers a variety of computer classes through MVLA Adult Education. These classes include basic introductory courses ("Meet the PC") and more specialized courses ("eBay Sales and Surfing" and "Surfing the Internet").

CREATIVE STITCHERY
You are welcome to bring your own stitchery projects or you might want to learn one of the interesting needlework or crafts being taught.

DRAWING & WATERCOLOR
Basic concepts of drawing and painting in watercolor. Students will explore color mixing and application, composition and detail. Many demonstrations. Seascapes, landscapes and florals will be emphasized.

ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE (ESL)

§ These classes meet 3 times a week: Monday, Thursday and Fridays.

§ All classes include instruction in listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

§ Please check with the instructor for enrollment information.

BEGINNING LITERACY/LOW (ESL)
This class is designed for students who have never studied English or for students who can read, write, understand and/or speak simple words and phrases.

BEGINNING HIGH (ESL)
This class is designed for students who can read short articles and write several sentences in English. These students can also speak and understand common English words and phrases.

INTERMEDIATE (ESL)
This class is designed for students who can read and write about familiar situations. These students can participate in conversations about everyday subjects and subjects they are interested in.

ADVANCED LOW (ESL)
This class is designed for student who use English independently in most familiar situations.

EXERCISE ON BROADWAY
Join this "chorus line" as students move their way into fitness to the sounds and choreography of Broadway and popular music. All abilities welcome; no previous experience necessary; work-out attire and leather-soled shoes recommended.

FIGURE AND PORTRAIT DRAWING
This is your opportunity to receive quality instruction while drawing portraits and figures of live clothed professional models! Instruction will be individualized; class is open to all levels and abilities. A variety of media will be explored: pencil, charcoal, conte crayon and inks.

FELDENKRAIS AWARNESS THROUGH MOVEMENT
This class helps to naturally improve coordination and quality of movement. This series of gentle movements will help you discover more comfortable and effective ways of completing everyday activities. Lessons involve floor exercises consisting of small gentle movements. *Please bring blanket and a mat.

GENERAL CONDITIONING
Warm-up, walking aerobics, toning and stretching. Learn to strengthen your body. Mondays from 1:00p.m. - 2:20p.m. and Thursdays from 10:15a.m. - 11:15a.m. To register or for more information, call Foothill College, (650) 949-7102.

GENEALOGY WORKSHOP
Dive into your history with this class. Using internet resources, charts, forms, software and documentation guidelines, students will learn to locate, interpret and document birth, marriage and death certificates, and land, census, and basic military documents.

HIKE FOR HEALTH
This class is offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Wear layered clothing. Bring sun and insect protection, water, whistle, personal first aid kit, a lunch and wear knobby-soled shoes or boots. Hikes range from 3-6 miles. Students must be willing to drive or carpool.

THE JOY OF MOVEMENT
These courses are appropriate for anyone wishing to reduce stress, discover new resources for mindfulness, healing, and creativity, rediscover the joy of movement, or "dance as if no one is watching." This class includes gentle warm-ups, movement, and mediations from yoga; fun activities inspired by dance, theater, music and art that encourage spontaneity, awaken the senses, and stir the creative imagination.

KARAOKE – DROP IN
Come to entertain or be entertained! Karaoke equipment will be provided, bring your own disc if you have one. Most of the discs are provided by the instructors and are in Chinese.

KNITTING AND CROCHETING CLUB
Join this group of knitting and crocheting enthusiasts, create fun projects and make new friends. Bring your own yarn or use some of ours to make caps, booties or afghans for needy children and seniors. Or, work on projects or your own. All skill levels welcomed.

LINE DANCING
Enjoy an hour of line dancing with other line dancers! No partner needed.

LIP READING (THE SPEECHREADER)
This class helps you learn strategies to cope with hearing loss, whether or not you are a hearing aid user.

LOW IMPACT AEROBICS
This class will provide you a full cardiovascular workout. The class is aimed at those who want to lower fat, cholesterol, blood pressure and have fun! There will be low impact movement to music paired with easy walking patterns. To register or for more information, call Foothill College, (650) 949-7102.

MEMOIRS
This class will give you the opportunity to review writing techniques involved in writing your memoirs and receive constructive criticism from teacher and students.

OILS & ACRYLICS- HOW TO SEE COLOR AND PAINT IT
This class is for beginning students and intermediate students who want to develop a more subtle perception of color.
ORCHESTRA – SOUTH BAY COMMUNITY ORCHESTRA

This is a full orchestra. Approximately 8 concerts per year are performed. Separate rehearsals will be conducted; strings 12:00-1:00 p.m., full orchestra 1:00-4:00 p.m. All symphony instruments are welcomed. *Material fee of $10.00
                                                                                                    

QIGONG
In this class, you will learn about the beautiful flowing combination of movements of Qigong and breathing techniques that stimulate energy flow. Qigong promotes your natural resiliency to stress and illness.

QUILTMAKING
The Senior Center offers two levels of quilt making. Learn how to complete a quilt over the course of the class or work on more advanced techniques. Students will be asked to regularly share their projects and information for the enrichment and enjoyment of all. Access to a sewing machine outside of class is necessary.

SOCIAL DANCE CLUB             
This club plays American, South American, and Chinese music from the 50s, 60s, and 70s. The types of dance music include the Cha Cha, Fox Trot, Rumba, Swing, Tango and Waltz. The club is constantly upgrading their music to encompass different mediums and equipment. Come join the Monday night "Dancing With the Oldies", and dance the night away.

SPANISH – HIGH INTERMEDIATE CONVERSATION
This class offers lively conversation, small groups, discussions, oral presentations and current events.

SQUARE DANCING
Join this lively class for square dance instruction and dancing. All levels welcome. No partner needed.

T’AI CHI
This class fosters positive mind-body skills, processes and events. T’ai Chi is believed to be the "grand ultimate way of life-the supreme ultimate mediation movement." Registration takes place the first day of class.

WOODCARVING
This is a friendly, informal drop-in class for beginning and more experienced carvers. The goal of this class is to become more knowledgeable about the types of woods, finishes and skills applied to this craft.

YOGA
The Senior Center offers a variety of yoga classes through Foothill College, MV-LA, and volunteer instructors. Each yoga class caters to the different needs of seniors, including modified postures, increasing balance, gentle stretching, and stress and anxiety management. Both beginning and more advanced levels are available.
