Environmental Safety Section

Hazardous Materials Program—Over 250 facilities are inspected during a given year. These facilities use or store hazardous materials ranging from paints and thinners to exotic chemicals used in the manufacture of high-tech equipment components.

Industrial Pretreatment Program—All domestic and process wastewaters discharged to the sanitary sewer end up at the Palo Alto Regional Water Quality Control Plant for treatment and subsequent discharge into San Francisco Bay (south of the Dumbarton Bridge).

Many industrial and commercial facilities such as plating shops, photo processors and machine shops, discharge process wastewaters containing oils, greases, and various heavy metals such as lead, copper, zinc, chrome, etc. For infomation on selecting and installing grease removal devices for food service facilities, click here.

While the Plant was designed and constructed to adequately treat domestic waste, it was not designed to treat these process wastewaters. Therefore, a wastewater pretreatment program was established to control the amounts and types of process wastewaters that could be discharged to the Plant.

Urban Runoff Program—The purpose of this program is to influence and change behaviors that negatively affect storm water runoff. Through practicing various pollution prevention efforts, we can improve water quality in our creeks and Bay at a fraction of what it would cost to install conventional storm water treatment systems.

This program includes inspecting construction sites, plan review of new construction, education and outreach, a pesticide minimization program, and various other programs all designed to reduce the amount and type of contaminants being discharged into our creeks and bay.
