Community Services Officers (CSOs) can be recognized by their light blue uniform shirts. They patrol Mountain View, but don't respond to calls that may involve physical confrontations, and have limited powers of arrest.

CSOs handle approximately 80% of routine police reports. By taking some of the workload off regular officers, CSOs free up officers to respond to more urgent calls and perform proactive crime prevention. CSOs also save the city money, in salaries, benefits and training costs.
A major CSO responsibility is conducting initial investigations and preparing police reports on criminal offenses, including:
- Burglaries
- Missing persons
- Thefts
- Vandalism
- Vehicle theft
- Identity theft
- Disturbing phone calls
CSOs also handle:
- Animal control issues
- City ordinance violations
- Parking enforcement
- Vehicle tows
- Lost/found property
- Non-injury traffic accident investigation
- Crime-scene evidence processing
- Traffic control
- Crime prevention/educational programs
CSOs can test for special assignments, including:- peer counselor
- field evidence team
- hostage negotiation
- field training officer
