Environmental Events

The City sponsors the following environmental events (specific dates may also be on the City's Calendar).

Arbor Day

Arbor Day is held on the second Saturday in March and offers many public awareness and educational opportunities in advance of Earth Day. The City's Community Services Department hosts the Arbor Day event annually.

Sorry, but there will be no document paper shredding at the Arbor Day event. See below for Paper Shredding Events for the new location and dates.

America Recycles Day

America Recycles Day is held on November 15th annually with many events taking place on the weekend near that date. Visit America Recycles Day to find an event near you. Sign a pledge card to Learn & Act:

  • Learn what materials are collected for recycling in Mountain View at home, apartments, schools and businesses, and where to get cash for bottles and cans.
  • Pledge to Act now to reduce your personal waste through waste reduction, recycling and composting activities starting in November and throughout the year.

More information on pledging coming soon.

Citywide Garage Sale at Homes

The annual Citywide Garage Sale is usually held on the first weekend in May at homes throughout Mountain View.  Registration begins in March and ends near the end of April each year.  This event is sponsored by the City's Solid Waste & Recycling Division of Public Works.  Visit www.mountainview.gov/garagesale or call 650-903-6311 for more information.

Community Yard Sale at Rengstorff Park

Sorry, there is no event in 2018 due to construction and remodeling at the Community Center.

Creek & Coastal Clean Up Events

National River Clean Up is held annually on the third Saturday in May.
California Coastal Clean Up Day is held annually on the third Saturday in September.

These are regional programs and Mountain View's participation is coordinated by the City's Fire Department, Environmental Protection, Water Pollution Prevention Program. More information may also be found at www.cleanacreek.org.

Earth Day

Earth Day is observed on April 22nd annually, but Earth Day is Every Day! The City celebrates this event in conjunction with Arbor Day and the Greenlight Film Festival.  We also encourage you to take advantage of a variety of volunteer activities advertised in newspapers, radio, televisions and the internet in the Spring. These activities are designed to conserve resources, protect the environment, and bring awareness to environmental issues. For more information on activities in our area, visit CalRecycle.ca.gov or http://earthday.org.

Greenlight Film Festival

This annual festival in April is a celebration of Earth Day featuring film projects that explore environmental citizenship and show how individual actions can reduce environmental impacts. Greenlight celebrates YOUTH filmmakers by encouraging entries from Middle Schools and High Schools in the Mountain View and Palo Alto areas! It is a great way for youth to find out more about how they can become more environmentally conscious, share strategies for reducing their impact with other youth, and practice their video-making skills. Work on it with a friend, classmate or family member! Videos must be submitted in March for the chance to win cash prizes. Finalists will have their videos shown at a public awards ceremony in April and all submissions may be shown on local cable channels.

For more information about this community event, contact the Palo Alto Media Center at 650-494-8686.

Home Composting Workshops

Find out how to build healthy soil through back-yard composting at a hands-on workshop for residents. Registration is required. For more information and a schedule, visit www.reducewaste.org or call 408-918-4640. See more information at www.mountainview.gov/composting.  Dates may also be listed on the City's Calendar.

Household Hazardous Waste Drop Off

This event, serving to dispose of paint, oil, cleaners, batteries, solvents and other household chemical products, is held on Saturdays throughout the year at a variety of locations. For more information, contact the Santa Clara County Household Hazardous Waste Program at www.HHW.org or (408) 299-7300.  More information can also be found on the City's website (under Explore to the left of the screen) or at www.mountainview.gov/hhw.

Medication Disposal Day

Prescription Drugs Take-Back Events

These events are operated by the City of Mountain View Police and Fire (650-903-6224). There are also events and drop-off locations available at no cost throughout the year through a countywide program. Visit our Medicines & Sharps Disposal web page for more information.

Paper Shredding

2017 Events:  saturdays, March 18, july 22, November 4  (all events 8 am-Noon)

Paper Shredding Events are held on three Saturdays during the year at our SMaRT Station in Sunnyvale (replaces the Mountain View event).

These free events help residents protect their identity and recycle confidential or sensitive paper documents, tax returns, bank statements, or health records. The event is located at the SMaRT Station, 301 Carl Road (cross-streets are Caribbean Dr & Borregas Av) in Sunnyvale.

  • Open to Mountain View, Palo Alto and Sunnyvale Residents and City Employees.
  • Proof of residency/City ID required.
  • Limit of 5 banker-sized boxes or 5 paper bags per household (no plastic bags or oversized boxes accepted).
  • Commercial/business customers not admitted.

Arriving before the event starts is not advised.  The best time to arrive is after 9:30 a.m. when the impacts of "early birds" has lessened.  If you miss the event, contact your local office supply store which may offer shredding services for a small fee.

Contact City of Sunnyvale for more information at (408) 730-7262 Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Home Shredding Tips

If you use a personal shredder at home, put shredded papers in paper bags, stapled shut, to prevent shreds from littering the neighborhood when your cart is collected. Put the bag under the mixed paper lid (grey). If you live in an apartment, put the bag in the Mixed Paper cart.

If you do not have a personal shredding machine at home, there are a few options.

Many office supply, printer and copy service stores are now providing document shredding services for a fee.  There are also companies which will come to your home and provide shredding services for a fee.

Typically, the home service companies charge residents $5 - $10 per file box if you bring them to their location; or a minimum fee of $90 to provide curbside service at your home plus a fee-per-box. If you choose the latter service, consider asking neighbors to join you and share the cost.

Papers placed in the recycling cart are not shredded at the SMaRT Station. Papers are shipped to recycling processors where they are then shredded, pulped, dried, pressed and rolled into new feedstock to make recycled paper.

repair cafe

Do you have things that you like, but no longer work? Don’t toss them, repair them! Volunteers will help you assess and fix your things instead of throwing them away. Repair Café Mountain View is a volunteer-run, community service dedicated to encouraging the repair and reuse of goods, rather than sending them to landfill. At any of the free, periodic Repair Café events, volunteers will guide you to tackle the repair yourself or fix it while you watch and learn. Chances are you will leave with a once-again useful item and some knowledge of how to repair this item and others.
