Approximately 3% of Mountain View's drinking water comes from local groundwater supply wells operated by the City of Mountain View. Groundwater management in Santa Clara County is performed by the SCVWD. The City of Mountain View operates seven groundwater supply wells to supplement drinking water purchased from the SFPUC and the SCVWD.
The Santa Clara Groundwater Basin is divided into three interconnected subbasins that transmit, naturally filter, and store water. Mountain View overlies the Santa Clara Valley Subbasin, located in the northern part of the County. The Santa Clara Valley Subbasin is approximately 22 miles long and 15 miles wide, with an area of 225 square miles.
