Artists Wanted for Utility Box Beautification

The City of Mountain View (CMV) and the Visual Arts Committee (VAC) are launching a utility box beautification pilot program, Sidewalk Studio. The program aims to enrich the community through the creation of public art by transforming common City-owned utility boxes into unique vibrant artwork while deterring graffiti. The Sidewalk Studio Pilot Program is designed to encourage civic pride, increase pedestrian traffic while creating a more attractive environment, and expand public art into new areas of the City.

The CMV and VAC seek to commission five artists or artists’ teams to create and paint original designs for five utility boxes within the City of Mountain View. Eligible artists and/or artists’ teams must a be resident of one of the following 11 San Francisco Bay Area counties (Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Benito, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, Solano and Sonoma).

APPLICATION

Applications will be accepted from Thursday, February 15, 2018 at 8:00AM (PST) to Wednesday, February 28, 2018, by 11:00 PM (PST). APPLY EARLY, applications will not be accepted after the 11pm, February 28th deadline and only the first 60 applications will be accepted (whichever comes first).

ELIGIBILITY

The call is open to all artists and/or artists’ teams over the age of 18 and artists and/or artists’ teams must be a resident of one of the following 11 San Francisco Bay Area counties (Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Benito, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, Solano and Sonoma).

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS

All applications must be submitted online via Café at www.callforentry.org, an online application system for calls for entry. There is no charge for artists to apply or use CaFE. Applications that are mailed, faxed, or hand-delivered will not be considered. All applications should include the following:

  • A brief description of design(s) concept;
  • Resumé;

  • Five to ten digital examples of previous artwork; and

  • A completed design proposal for a utility box on the template provided:

    • In full detail and color;

    • Each applicant or team can submit up to three design proposals per application.

SELECTION

The VAC anticipates making artists selection by March 14, 2018. Artists will be notified by March 21, 2018. The artists chosen to paint a utility box must attend a mandatory orientation. Date, time and location to be determined.
