Mi nombre es Olga. Me gradué en el programa piloto en el 2017. Me interesé en la Academia porque quería aprender más para ayudar a la comunidad. Había participado en CHAC, aprendiendo sobre liderazgo y salud, CAT, ELAC, DELAC – todo lo que tenía que ver con el sistema escolar, pero sentía que me faltaba el conocimiento sobre mi Ciudad- De la Ciudad sabía cuándo íbamos a luchar por algo, pero nunca un contacto cercano. Fue muy relevante conocer sobre los programas de vivienda para personas de bajos ingresos. No sabía que ese recurso estaba al alcance de la comunidad. Pensaba que la Ciudad era solo el concejo, pero con la Academia aprendí de todos los programas e iniciativas que la ciudad abarca.

A mí me empoderó, me dio conocimiento. Me convertí en un puente. Siento que ahora nos escuchan más. Tenemos el privilegio de que nuestras demandas van directamente al concilio. Nos enteramos inmediatamente de las iniciativas y programas o anuncios de la Ciudad.

Además de estar involucrada con la Academia, estoy involucradas en causas que van encaminadas a informar y dar apoyo como CAT, la Coalición de Inquilinos y recientemente muy involucrada con el Fondo de Solidaridad.

Yo les diría a los próximos participantes de la Academia que el conocimiento es poder y que debemos saber sobre el funcionamiento de la ciudad para ayudar a la comunidad y ayudarnos a nosotros mismos. Educarnos para ser un ejemplo para nuestros hijos e hijas.

My name is Olga. I graduated from the pilot program in 2017. I became interested in the Academy because I wanted to learn more to help the community. I had participated in CHAC, learning about leadership and health, groups like CAT, ELAC and DELAC. - everything that had to do with the school system, but I felt I lacked knowledge about my city. I knew about the City when I was advocating for something, but never a close contact. It was very relevant to learn about accesible housing programs. I didn't know that those resources were available to the community. I thought the City was just the council, but with the Academy I learned about all the programs and initiatives that the city encompasses.

It empowered me; it gave me knowledge. I became a bridge. I feel we are listened to more now. We have the privilege that our demands go directly to the council. We hear immediately about City initiatives and programs or announcements.

In addition to being involved with the Academy, I am involved in causes that are geared towards informing and providing support. Such groups are CAT, the Tenants Coalition and recently very involved with the Solidarity Fund.

I would tell upcoming Academy participants that knowledge is power and that we must know about our local government to help the community and help ourselves. Educate ourselves to be an example for our children.

Marilú Cuesta Flores

Mi nombre es Marilú Cuesta Flores. Me gradué de la Academia en el 2019. Lo que más me movió a participar en la Academia fue mi deseo de entender como funcionaban los diferentes departamentos de la ciudad. Lo mas interesante que aprendí fue escuchar las diferentes presentaciones de la Ciudad, dar mi opinión en el concilio después de escuchar al administrador de la ciudad.

Participar en la Academia me ayudo a apreciar más el trabajo que nuestros representantes hacen, el impacto que sus decisiones tienen en nuestras vidas y lo importante que es estar involucrado, ayudando e interactuando con miembros de la comunidad. Además de pertenecer al grupo de Embajadores de la ciudad, pertenezco a Community Action Team (CAT), Latino Parent Outreach y Mountain View Tenant’s Coalition.

Para los nuevos participantes, les digo que esta es una oportunidad para consolidar el compromiso de amor y trabajo para con nosotros mismos, nuestras familias y comunidad.

My name is Marilú Cuesta Flores. I graduated from the Academy in 2019. What moved me the most to participate in the Academy was my desire to understand how the different City departments worked. The most interesting thing I learned was listening to the different presentations and give my opinion at a Council Meeting after listening to the city manager.
Participating in the Academy helped me to appreciate more the job our elected officials do, the impact their decisions have on our lives and how important it is to be involved, helping and interacting with members of the community. In addition to belonging to the city's Ambassadors group, I belong to Community Action Team (CAT), Latino Parent Outreach and Mountain View Tenant's Coalition.

For the new participants, I say that this is an opportunity to consolidate the commitment of love and work for ourselves, our families and community.

Carmen Quintana

Mi nombre es Carmen Quintana. Gracias a la invitación de una amiga fui parte de la primera promoción en el 2017. Una de las experiencias más importantes que tuve fue visitar el ayuntamiento después de tantos años viviendo en Mountain View, inclusive pude participar en una reunión del concilio y expresar mi opinión. Aprendí a usar un extintor, a reciclar y a conservar el agua.
El participar de la Academia me permitió sentirme parte de esta comunidad maravillosa que es Mountain View, me inspiró a motivar a familiares y amigos a participar y ayudar a miembros de la comunidad compartiendo información. Por ejemplo, durante la pandemia en el 2020 pude conectar a miembros de la comunidad con organizaciones que ofrecían comida e identificar recursos para la gente que estaba enferma. Desde hace algunos meses estoy ayudando a hacer citas para que la gente se vacune.

La Academia no solo me dio la oportunidad de conocer y conversar con el alcalde y concejales de Mountain View, sino también conocer a las personas increíbles que hay a mi alrededor que nos brindan su trabajo y servicio para mantener y mejorar a Mountain View.

A los nuevos participantes, les digo que se animen a ser parte de la Academia 2021. Un poco diferente pues podría ser virtual, pero aún así tendrán una experiencia enriquecedora a todos los niveles.

My name is Carmen Quintana. Thanks to the invitation of a friend, I was part of the first graduating class in 2017. One of the most important experiences I had was visiting City Hall after so many years living in Mountain View, I was even able to participate in a council meeting and express my opinion. I learned how to use a fire extinguisher, how to recycle and about water conservation.

Participating in the Academy allowed me to feel part of the wonderful community that is Mountain View, inspired me to encourage family and friends to get involved and help members of the community by sharing information. For example, during the pandemic in 2020, I was able to connect community members with organizations that offered food and resources for people who were sick. For the past few months, I have been helping to make appointments for people to get vaccinated.

The Academy not only gave me the opportunity to meet and talk with City of Mountain View Mayor and Councilmembers, but also the opportunity to meet the amazing people around me who work very hard to make our City a better place.

To the new participants, I would like to encourage them to be a part of the 2021 Academy. It will be a little different as it will be virtual, but you will still have an enriching experience at all levels.

Mi nombre es María. Me gradué de la Academia en el 2018. Me decidí porque tenía interés en aprender más sobre la Ciudad. La experiencia más interesante fue cuando tuvo que asumir el rol de concejal y tomar decisiones en asuntos en los que había mucha oposición. Me di cuenta de lo difícil que es.

A nivel personal logré informarme más sobre la ciudad y comunicarme más efectivamente con otros miembros de la comunidad sobre lo que había aprendido. En estos momentos estoy involucrada con CAT y ayudando a llenar solicitudes para las ayudas con la renta.

A los nuevos participantes les diría que van a aprender mucho sobre el gobierno local y los programas que la ciudad de Mountain View tiene para sus residentes.

My name is Maria. I graduated from the Academy in 2018. I decided to join the Academy because I was interested in learning more about the city. The most interesting experience I had, was when I had to take on the role of a councilmember and then make decisions on issues where there were a lot of opposition. I realized how difficult it was.

On a personal level I was able to become more informed about the city and l learned to communicate more effectively with other members of the community about what I had learned. I am now involved with CAT and helping to fill out applications for rental assistance.

I would tell new participants that they will learn a lot about their local government and the programs that the City of Mountain View has for its residents.

Me llamo Tania O’Connell. En el año 2017 participé activamente brindando apoyo a la comunidad latina que estaba siendo severamente atacada por el gobierno federal. Me uní a la Academia con el objetivo de conocer mejor a la comunidad a la que buscábamos servir y encontrar otros líderes con quien hacer mancuerna para servir a nuestra comunidad. Lo más importante que aprendí fue que la ciudad de Mountain View es un lugar progresivo que realmente busca el bienestar de todos sus habitantes. Aprendí que, si bien la Ciudad tiene buenos deseos, también le falta entender la gravedad de la situación que algunos de nuestros vecinos están pasando. Entendí lo necesario que es tomar ventaja de la política progresiva del concejo y la invitación abierta para hablar directamente con los miembros para abogar por los cambios que se necesitan. A través de la Academia logré conocer a los líderes cívicos de esta ciudad. Ellos me motivan a seguir en la lucha. He hecho amistades profundas y he desarrollado sinergias con otros líderes. Nuestra ciudad es un mucho mejor lugar para vivir como resultado de nuestro trabajo conjunto. Además de participar en la Academia estoy involucrada en el liderazgo escolar a través del PTA y como miembro de Listos Mountain View. Participar en la Academia fueron horas bien invertidas que me ayudaron a conocer gente muy interesante y a fortalecer la costura social de esta ciudad.

Para este nuevo participante que está pensándolo: ¡Hazlo! Es una experiencia enriquecedora en todos los aspectos. El tiempo es una inversión en tu crecimiento personal y en el fortalecimiento de la comunidad en la que vives.

My name is Tania O'Connell. In 2017 I was actively involved in providing support to the Latino community that was being severely targeted by the federal government. I joined the Academy with the goal of getting to know the community we were looking to serve better and finding other leaders with whom to team up to serve our community. The most important thing I learned was that the City of Mountain View is a progressive place that truly seeks the well-being of all its residents. I learned that while the City has good wishes, it also lacks understanding of the severity of the serious situation that some of our neighbors are going through. I understood how necessary it is to take advantage of the council's progressive policy and open invitation to speak directly to members to advocate for the changes that are needed. Through the Academy I got to know the civic leaders of this city. They motivate me to keep fighting. I have made deep friendships and developed synergies with other leaders. Our City is a much better place to live as a result of our work together. In addition to participating in the Academy I am involved in school leadership through the PTA and as a member of Listos Mountain View. Participating in the Academy were hours well spent that helped me meet some very interesting people and strengthen the social fabric of this City.

To this new participant who is thinking about participating in the Academy, do it! It is an enriching experience in every aspect. The time is an investment in your personal growth and in strengthening the community in which you live.

Me llamo Ángeles. Me gradué en el 2019. Me uní a la Academia cuando estaba peleando para no ser desalojada de mi vivienda. Miembros de la comunidad me motivaron a participar y conocer más sobre el funcionamiento de la ciudad y los recursos de los cuales a veces no sabemos. Lo más importante que aprendí fue a considerar a los 7 miembros del concejo y saber que tienen una gran responsabilidad en sus manos. La Academia me dio más confianza en mí misma. Además de estar involucrada con la Academia y el grupo de Embajadores, pertenezco al grupo Cafecito con Sabor a Justicia en donde ayudo a informar a miembros de la comunidad.

Para los nuevos participantes, les dirían que se animen, que no es tiempo perdido. Por el contrario, saldrán ganando a largo plazo.

My name is Angeles. I graduated in 2019. I joined the Academy when I was fighting to not be evicted from my home. Members of the community motivated me to get involved and learn more about how the city works and the resources we sometimes don't know about. The most important thing I learned was to consider the council members and know that they have a great responsibility in their hands. The Academy gave me more confidence in myself. In addition to being involved with the Academy and the Ambassadors group, I belong to Cafécito con Sabor a Justicia group where I help inform members of the community.

For new participants, I would tell them to go for it, it is not a waste of time. On the contrary, you will gain a lot in the long run.
