Greenhouse Gas Emissions

Human activities, such as burning fossil fuels for heat, electricity, and transportation, manufacturing products, and growing crops, all release greenhouse gases. These gases trap heat in the atmosphere, increasing temperatures and contributing to environmental changes all over the globe.

The City regularly conducts greenhouse gas inventories to measure its emissions and has identified strategies to reduce its emissions 80% by 2050 through a community-wide Community Climate Protection Roadmap (CPR) and operations-level Municipal Operations Climate Action Plan (MOCAP). Impacts of Climate Change

The effects of climate change are being felt all around the world. The San Francisco Bay Area has already experienced many these impacts, including sea level rise and an increase in the frequency and severity of flooding, storms, droughts, extreme heat, and wildfires. With increased ocean temperature, another effect of climate change, the health of the San Francisco Bay itself is at risk.

Climate change will also impact the Bay Area's water and energy supply, infrastructure, public health, transportation systems, agriculture, and natural ecosystems. With so much at stake, it's critical that we work together to reduce our emissions as much and as quickly as possible.
