The El Monte Corridor Improvements project will improve overall safety for all modes of travel within and throughout the following nine intersections within the corridor: Two intersections along El Camino Real at Escuela Avenue and El Monte Avenue, and seven intersections along El Monte Avenue from El Camino Real to the City limits at Springer Road and Jay Street.
The El Monte Corridor Study, conducted between 2019 and 2022, gathered feedback from the community, Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee, and Council Transportation Committee and proposed three alternatives for corridor improvements to Council on June 27, 2023. Council approved a road diet alternative which includes incorporating multimodal improvements and reducing El Monte Avenue from an existing four-lane cross section to a three-lane cross section. The El Monte Corridor Improvements project will resurface the roadway and also install new pedestrian and bicycle safety improvements along the corridor.
On May 14, 2024, Council approved a professional services contract for civil engineering design. Project design is underway and anticipated to be completed in fall 2025 with construction to follow by spring 2026.
