A gavel on a documentThe City of Mountain View is committed to supplying high quality drinking water and providing a safe and reliable supply to our customers.

Water Quality Regulations

Drinking water originates from many sources including rivers, lakes, reservoirs and wells. As water travels over the surface of the land or through the ground it dissolves naturally occurring minerals and can pick up other substances which result from the presence of animal or human activities. U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and State Water Resources Control Board (Water Board) regulations limit contaminant levels for drinking water supplied by public systems. The EPA and Water Board also regulate water quality monitoring practices and reporting.

Water Sampling Program

Kerry sampling waterEach year, the City and its suppliers perform thousands of tests to analyze water samples for over 150 water constituents to ensure the drinking water you receive meets the standards set by the EPA and Water Board.

  • City personnel collect water samples each week from dedicated sampling stations throughout the water distribution system. A private, state-certified laboratory analyzes the samples.
  • Mountain View’s water system operators monitor chlorine and pH levels daily.
  • The Santa Clara Valley Water District (SCVWD) and the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC), Mountain View’s water wholesale suppliers, perform their own water quality analyses of the source and treated water.

The City of Mountain View publishes the results of these tests in an annual Consumer Confidence / Water Quality Report distributed to the public and other periodic publications.

Water Service Line Inventory

As part of efforts to remove lead water pipes from water systems nationwide, the United States Environmental Protection Agency and California State Water Resources Control Board updated the Lead and Copper Rule regulations and require all water systems to create an inventory of water service line materials in their respective systems. Previous efforts to identify potential lead lines in Mountain View’s water system concluded that none existed and the current 2024 inventory found the same. Utilities staff used historical building, construction and maintenance records along with strategic onsite inspections with state approved statistical analysis to verify water service line materials throughout the City. The interactive map below will show service line materials throughout the City. Please note, small sections of the City served by California Water Service (CalWater) are not available in this map. Please see CalWater’s service line map (https://pws-ptd.120wateraudit.com/LosAltosSuburban-CA) for details on your service line.
